GOVERNOR Bola Tinubu of
Lagos State weekend conferred honorary citizenship status of
the state on the chairperson of the Miss World Organisation,
Mrs. Julia Molley, in recognition of her contribution to the
advancement of humanity.
The beauty Pageant
organising body also weekend laid to rest the controversy
over who should send a Nigerian representation to the annual
contest between the Daily Times Plc and Silverbird
Productions, known for its packaging of the Most Beautiful
Girl in Nigeria (MBGN), the platform under which the current
queen, Miss Agbani Darego, was produced.
At Saturday's state
banquet held in honour of the reigning queen, Agbani Darego,
at Lagos State House, Marina, Governor Tinubu, currently in
Saudi Arabia with Vice Present Atiku Abubakar said his
decision to grant Lagos state citizenship to Mrs. Molley was
informed by her organisation's commitment to improving the
welfare of children the world over, especially since
1970.
The governor, whose
decision was communicated to Mrs. Molley and the galaxy of
important personalities that graced the diner through his
Information and Strategy Commissioner, Mr. Dele Alae, stated
that her drive to raise £100 million for the upliftment
of children needed commendation the world over.
"From this night (Saturday night) onward, you
have become a citizen of Lagos state. This is in recognition
of your contribution to humanity, especially your commitment
to raise £100 million for your organisation's child
project, which our own Agbani Darego will help
promote," Mr. Alae
quoted the governor as saying.
Earlier at the dinner, the
First Lady of Lagos state, Chief (Mrs.) Oluremi Tinubu and
State Commissioner for Special Duties, Mrs. Teju Phillips,
had described Agbani Darego's victory at this year's Miss
World pageant as a victory for Nigerian and African
women.
They urged the queen to
keep the flag flying for women and youths not only in the
country, but the continent as a whole, especially as she
remained the first and only black African woman to have won
the crown.
Meanwhile, addressing the
world press weekend, the head of the Miss World
Organisation, organisers of the Miss World beauty pageant,
Mrs. Molley, said her organisation stood by the franchise
given Silverbird Productions in 1986 to present Nigeria's
representative for the annual Miss World pageant.
There had, for quite
sometime, been a raging controversy between the Daily Times
Plc and Silverbird Productions concerning who should forward
representation for Nigeria from their various national
beauty pageants, Miss Nigeria and the Most Beautiful Girl in
Niger (MBGN) respectively.
But according to Mrs.
Molley, the working relationship between the Miss World
Organisation is so warm that nothing could now stand between
both organisations.
She said in as much as she
had respect for the Miss Nigeria contest organised by the
Daily Times Plc, her organisation would like to stick with
the Silverbird Productions now or in the future.
"It is difficult to break a contract with
people you have been working with for so many years. We have
a relationship with Silverbird Productions, and I don't see
us breaking the relationship now or in the foreseeable
future," said Mrs.
Molley, who expressed eagerness to contribute to Nigeria's
development.
She added that
participation in the Miss World Pageant was not a case of
the highest bidder, stressing that her organisation had even
in the past gone out of its way to pay participation fees
for some poor countries of the world.
According to her, the Miss
World Beauty pageant is not about making money, but about
contributing to the development of humanity.
Also at the weekend, the
queen, Miss Agbani Darego, spoke of her desire to embark on
child development projects across the country, adding that
she would soon embark on fund-raising drive across the globe
for the purpose.
Agbani, who is on a 2-day
official visit to Lagos State, on the invitation of the
state government, also urged women in the country and the
continent to urgently mobilise support for condemned
Safiya Husseini, sentenced to death by stoning by Sharia
Court in Sokoto State over adultery.
She promised to use her
present position to address the condemned women's case, with
a view to saving her life.

citoyenneté nationale à Madame Julia Molley,
Présidente de l'Organisation Mondiale des Miss, en
reconnaissance de sa contribution pour l'avancement de
l'humanité.
La grande solennité mise en place durant tout le
week-end a aussi mis en valeur la grande controverse qui
existe au sujet de la représentation du Niger au
concours annuel organisé par le Daily Times et les
Productions Silverbird, réputés pour
l'organisation de l'élection de la la plus belle
fille du Nigeria (MBGN), et au cours de laquelle, Mlle
Agbani DAREGO, a été élue Reine.
Au cours du banquet officiel qui s'est tenu samedi en honneur
à la reine actuelle, Agbani Darego, à
l'Hôtel de Ville Marina de Lagos, le Gouverneur
Tinubu, actuellement en Arabie Saoudite, en présence
du Vice Président, Atiku Abubakar a confirmé
sa décision d'accorder la citoyenneté de
l'état de Lagos à Mme Molley, laquelle a
été informée par le comité
directeur de son organisation de son action en vue
d'améliorer la protection de l'enfance à
travers le monde surtout depuis 1970.
Le gouverneur, dont la décision a été
communiquée à Mme. Molley et à la
constellation de personnalités importantes
présentes au dîner par l'intermédiaire
de son représentant, le commissaire M. Dele Alae,
chargé de l' information et des questions de
stratégie, a également annoncé que
celle-ci avait donné l'ordre de réserver un
fonds de £ 100 Millions pour l'éducation des
enfants à travers le monde entier, lequel a
déclaré en citant le gouverneur.
"A partir de cette
soirée, vous êtes devenue citoyenne de l'Etat
de Lagos, et cela en reconnaissance de votre contribution
à l'humanité, tout particulièrement
pour votre engagement d'attribuer la somme de £ 100
millions pour votre projet en faveur de l'enfance, que notre
Chère Agbani Darego aidera à
promouvoir".
Avant le dîner, la Première Dame de l'Etat de Lagos,
Mme. Oluremi Tinubu et le Commissaire d'Etat de la Fonction
Publique, Mme. Teju Phillips, avaient dépeint la
victoire d'Agbani Darego à l'élection de Miss
Monde de cette année comme une victoire des femmes
Nigérianes et Africaines.
Elles ont exhorté la "Reine" à faire flotter
le drapeau pour des femmes et les jeunes gens non seulement
de ce pays, mais également de tout le continent
africain, dans son entier, et car elle est la
première femme Africaine noire à avoir
gagné la couronne.
En même temps, s'adressant à la presse mondiale, le
comité directeur chargé de l'organisation du
concours de Miss Monde Organisation, par
l'intermédiaire de Mme. Molley, a
déclaré que l'organisation de ce concours
avait déjà été
réalisé grâce au concours des
Productions Silverbird

Mais selon Mme. Molley,
le développement des relations au sein du
comité chargé de l'organisation de Miss Monde
du Monde a été si intense qu'aucun obstacle ne
pouvait désormais subsister entre toutes les
personnes chargées de l'organisation. Elle s'est
encore exprimée pour dire que tant que le
débat sera respecté par le Daily Times Plc.,
son organisation restera en résonance avec les
Productions Silverbird.
"Il est difficile de rompre un contrat avec les gens avec lesquels
vous avez travaillé depuis longtemps. Nous avons un
partenariat privilégié avec les Productions
Silverbird, et je ne nous vois pas cesser la relation
privilégiée.

Melle Agbani, qui est en
visite officielle de deux jours dans l'État de Lagos,
invitée par le gouvernement de cet état,
a
également insisté pour que les femmes dans le
pays et sur tout le Continent africain se mobilisent pour
demander la grâce de Safiya Husseini, condamnée
par Cour Sharia dans État de Sokoto à
être lapidée pour adultère.
Elle a
promis d'utliiser toute son influence pour faire en sorte
que Safiya ait la vie sauve.
