Announcing "The 'Second Wave' and Beyond" a new online scholarly community

"The 'Second Wave' and Beyond," created and edited by Kimberly Springer, Stephanie Gilmore, and Judith Ezekiel, is an online "scholarly community" on the history of the U.S. women's movement since 1960. This innovative form of electronic communications and research combines features of a discussion group, blog, and wikipedia incorporated into a traditional website. It is a free feature of Kathryn Kish Sklar and Tom Dublin's widely-praised Women and Social Movements website and online journal, published by the State University of New York at Binghamton and Alexander Street Press, a pioneer in online publishing of academically rigorous and innovative scholarship.

"The 'Second Wave' and Beyond" will bring together feminist scholars, activists, and thinkers to create a stimulating and supportive environment in which to analyze compelling questions about feminist activism and theories, define new directions for historical research on this period, and provide a venue for publishing traditional articles. It will also allow us to write and record this history in new ways made possible by the medium.

Rather than be inundated with emails, you can log onto "The 'Second Wave' and Beyond" at will and participate as much or as little as you like. You can:

  • start or join ongoing conversations;
  • listen to or submit oral histories;
  • use or create flexible archives of primary source documents of varying sizes with text, photos, and clips;
  • view or add to our extensive chronology of the women's movement;
  • discuss new books and websites;
  • contribute to teaching resources; and
  • comment on current documents.

"The 'Second Wave' and Beyond" will study and document the myriad forms of activism that have constituted one of the most important social movements of the twentieth century, one that endures into the twenty-first.
